Packing and Weather-proofing

As we get closer to moving day for The Spike, Randy is gathering all the parts and pieces together in large tubs, wrapping everything in tarps, and weather-proofing as much as possible for the trip to Colorado.

The plan is to move The Spike this week. Please pray for clear, dry roads and a great trip to it's next build home.

Bittersweet Progress

Just because we put the build on hold to navigate life, doesn't mean all work stops.

Slowly but surely the rig is coming back together and  starting to look like a vehicle again. This progress is bittersweet. It's the first step[s in getting The Spike on a trailer and to it's new, temporary home while wiring gets accomplished and then it will get shipped back to me here in Missouri.

More info soon, but enjoy the pictures.

In these pictures, the front axle has been painted and reassembled under the frame.  It is rolling again and holding it's own weight!

I have some news, take a seat

To all my friends and followers,

I have some news I need to share, so I hope you are sitting down.

Our family has had a very rough year so far and it has hit us hard. While I am doing everything in my power to keep positive and keep moving forward, I am simply out of budget for the build and need to take care of my family first. I want to be clear, I am NOT selling the project and the ministry dream will still become a reality, but I need to take a few months off (hopefully not much more) to get back on track with our family first.

You all are and have been amazing. Randy at Extreme Overkill Fabrication has been amazing keeping progress moving forward as my budget has allowed, but I need to take a break at this time due to some personal reasons here at home. All of my supporters have heard the news and now it's time to share it with you.

I am working on the answer to the question everyone has been asking, "What now?" I will keep all of you in the loop when the project resumes. I also hope to stop by and get some video and pictures of The Spike this July before it gets moved, so stay tuned for that.

I just want to say thank you again for your all of your patience and your prayers as I have worked on this project one small step at a time. This build will go on and the ministry dream will continue, but we have to take a step back for now. These two versus are hitting me hard right now, so the prayer is appreciated.

Isaiah 40:31 "but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint."

Psalm 27:14 "Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!"

Thanks again for the support. I look forward to getting back in build season soon.

Just keep building. Just keep building, building bulding

I know, it's a play on the old "Just keep swimming," from Disney's Finding Nemo, but it applies.

When I started this project over 2 years ago (not the dream, but the physical project), I had no idea what I was in for.  I had no idea what all went into a full build like The Spike.  I am so blessed to have a guy like Randy at Extreme Overkill Fabrication and others I can bounce ideas off of and rely on to keep the build moving forward.

Recently, I followed up with Randy to see how it was going.  He commented to me there were no major milestones, but a list of things had been done including finish welding on all the steering box mount and things associated with that.  He also has been buttoning up the engine and going over all that is involved in the heart of this beast.  I chuckled when Randy mentioned that he was getting ready to pull out the front axle and finish weld that.  All the assembly and work, now he needs to tear it down again!

You know what has been the thorn in our side the past few weeks?  Where the dipstick would be routed to check the transmission fluid.  Yup, all these bog pieces of steel, the engine, and all things you see and think about, and the custom routing for the stupid dipstick.  I guess I am the dipstick that would have never even considered this in a buggy build.

Anyway, I will share a couple pictures Randy sent me.  What you are looking at is the finish welding around the steering box mount and the custom winch plate that will hold the winch behind the grill of the rig.

It's a long road, and hopefully the rig will get debuted at the 2019 Crawl 4 Christ.  I don't want to push it, after all this time, I want it built right, not have to be built again.

God Bless you all for sticking with me.

More progress as we keep moving forward.  After some delays with parts ordered and shipping, we now have more steering parts and have put the first round of paint on the rear axle.

Stopping is Important, but This Update Can't Steer You Wrong!

Wow, can you believe it has been nearly 3 months since I last updated?  I am very sorry for that.  Rest assured, things have been happening.  From attending SEMA to Randy getting married (another huge congratulations to him and his new wife), and then reaching Thanksgiving and Christmas and all the crazy things that happen at this time of year, the months have just flown by.

I was very excited when I got visual Christmas presents from Randy. He sent pictures of the latest work, he has been working on steering.

Have you ever bought or built a steering setup from scratch?  I never imagined the amount of calculations and details to put together a steering setup.

Do you want power steering? Hydraulic assist? Complete hydraulic?
Where will the steering box go? (I didn't have to work on this one).
What about your steering wheel? Shape? Size? Depth? Cover? Markings? Horn Button? Quick disconnect?
Do you want the entire wheel to have some adjustable features? Tilt? Telescoping?

These are just some of the questions I had to figure out in the past weeks and get answers to Randy at Extreme Overkill Fabrication so he could move forward.
After they all were answered, parts were ordered.

The original steering wheel from the 1985 4Runner was not going to work, but I wanted to keep with the original look as much as possible.  So I wanted a 3-spoke wheel with a medium depth, but not a deep dish.

Next was size and texture.  Have you ever actually thought about how big your steering wheel is?  Me either.
After a ton of online reading, thinking about how I grip the steering wheel, and actually measuring both my vehicles at home, I had more of an idea.
I selected a Grant Steering Wheel that will work well for the build and budget.  The cover is a fairly thick wrap for my big hands; but not too thick, so even small handed drivers will be able to control the wheel. I also opted for the center stripe (yellow of course).  This is usually a racing feature, but will be a huge help for knowing when the tires are aimed straight down the trail.

Finally, I considered the attachment.  Keeping in mind my build goal to allow many people to drive The Spike, I wanted a tilt wheel with quick disconnect to allow easier entry and exit from the buggy.

Pair all that with the hydraulic assist we have planed, and we had something to go on. Randy ordered  all the required mounting hardware and steering shaft.

Check out these pictures as Randy has assembled a great setup to keep the tires going where the driver points them.  Thanks Randy for the awesome work.

If you look close in this picture, you can see the new exhaust manifold and down tubes and how tight it was to fit between the engine and the frame.

Here is the steering box mounted to the frame rail.

A huge thank you goes out again to Randy at Extreme Overkill Fabrication.  I know you have been busy with the shop and other things in life this winter, but you are still pushing forward and I appreciate it.

Field Trip!

It's time for a field trip!

I need to say a HUGE thank you to Joe Devine of Devine Diesel & Offroad (www.devinediesel.com) for use of the monster lift in the shop this past week.  When you need to hold the chassis level, and yet flex the rig out to check for clearances, that takes a lot of space and Joe allowed us to use that space.  Thanks Joe!

So Randy loaded up The Spike and headed for the home of Devine Diesel and Offroad this week in order to some clearance and flex testing.  The goal?  First was to set the final height of the chassis where it will clear the tires and full movement of the suspension. Second, to verify clearances of all components below the frame when the suspension was moved through it's axis.

Keep in mind, these tests are not to articulate the vehicle to it's maximum, but to verify clearances.  The articulation was all completed while the chassis and frame were kept level and stable. Here are the pictures.

First, The Spike was put on dollies to allow side-to-side movement to center the chassis as needed.  Then the monster lift was used to raise the chassis and position it in the desired height.

Now with things positioned where we think they will be finished, we replace the shock braces with the coil-overs and get to flexing.  Check it out.

After the day in the Devine shop was completed, it was back on the trailer and back to Randy's shop.  Thanks again Joe for the help and facility.

More build to come, so I appreciate any comments and feedback.  God Bless you all.
